What are Dentures?
Dentures are artificial tooth replacements that allow patients with missing teeth to preserve their facial profile, while maintaining their ability to eat properly and speak well.
They can be used to replace one missing tooth, several missing teeth or a whole jaw of missing teeth.
If missing teeth are not replaced, the remaining teeth can begin to shift, causing misalignment issues. Additionally, when you lose teeth, facial muscles can sag around the empty space, making you look older. Dentures can help fill in that gap, maintaining your facial profile.
As a result, it is essential to have missing teeth replaced. If you are missing some or all of your natural teeth, dentures may be a good option for replacing them.
Types of Dentures
When it comes to affordable options to have missing teeth replaced, dentures are often recommended. There are two types of dentures offered at Airdrie Dental Studio:
- Full Dentures - Full dentures replace all of the teeth in the top and/or bottom section of your mouth, and are usually made from acrylic or porcelain.
- Partial Dentures - Partial dentures can be used to replace one or more missing teeth, and are generally made from a combination of acrylic and metal.
The Denture Process
If you and your dentist have decided that dentures are right for you, they will begin the process by taking measurements and models of your jaw to ensure that your custom made dentures will fit you perfectly.
If necessary, your dentist will give you immediate dentures so that you are not left with missing teeth while your custom set is being made. If you need to have teeth removed, it will happen at this first appointment.
Our dentists will collaborate with a denturist to create your custom set. Once they are ready for you, you will wear them for a few weeks, and then return to our office for any additional adjustments.
Your custom set of dentures will be removable, so you can take them out so they can be cleaned. It is also recommended to take them out while you sleep.
